SAN RAFAEL– Mark Leno's campaign for State Senate today announced the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition, one of the oldest and largest bicycle advocacy organizations in the country, has endorsed his candidacy, citing Leno's dedication to creating safe, healthy and livable communities through bicycling and other forms of clean transportation that reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
"Throughout his legislative career, Mark Leno has been a champion for bicyclists in the City and throughout California," said Leah Shahum, Executive Director of the 9,000-member San Francisco Bicycle Coalition. "His bold and innovative 'Complete Streets' legislation, meant to help communities design safer roadways for bicyclists and pedestrians, has sparked national interest and has paved the way for similar legislation in other states. Mark Leno has been a powerful ally of the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition and we are proud to endorse him today."
"The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition has worked to make streets safer and more efficient for the more than 100,000 San Franciscans who use bicycles as a regular means of healthy sustainable transportation," said Assemblyman Mark Leno. "I am honored to have the endorsement of the 9,000 member SFBC and look forward to partnering with them again in the Senate.”
Last year, Leno authored landmark legislation encouraging communities to create transportation plans that lead toward fewer traffic jams, reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and increased physical activity through riding a bicycle or walking. Specifically, AB 1358 would provide help to cities and counties as they work to accommodate all users of the roadway through roadway design elements.
In the 3rd Senate District democratic primary, Leno faces incumbent Carole Migden and former Assemblyman Joe Nation. The district includes all of Marin County, southern Sonoma County, and the eastern portion of San Francisco.
The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition adds more momentum to Leno's campaign that has received the recently-announced endorsements of Congresswoman Jackie Speier, Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey, Marin County Supervisor Susan Adams and organizations such as the California Professional Firefighters (CPF), California Teachers Association (CTA), California Federation of Teachers (CFT), California Statewide Law Enforcement Association (CSLEA), Democracy For America (DFA), Progressive Democrats of Sonoma County, as well as the United Auto Workers Region 5.
